PATNA: Two days after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) levied a ‘compensation’ of Rs4,000 crore on Bihar government for its failure in scientifically managing the liquid and solid waste in violation of the mandate of law, particularly judgments of the Supreme Court and the NGT itself, the state government on Saturday issued a detailed statement with regard to the various works being carried out for sewage management.

Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO), an agency of the urban development and housing department, claimed in a statement that the NGT has asked the state government to create a separate “ring-fenced account” and utilise the amount only for waste management works — sold and liquid waste — according to the chief secretary’s directions.

Deliberating on the liquid waste management works in the state, the BUIDCO stated that eight sewage treatment plants (STPs) with capacity of 234.5 MLD (million litres per day) have been made ready and few other sewage projects with combined capacity of 477.5 MLD are under progress. The total capacity of the approved STP projects in the state is 841.6 MLD.

The BUIDCO further stated that works have been completed on five sewage networks in Patna. Besides, construction work is underway on STPs in Begusarai, Munger, Hajipur, Chhapra, Muzaffarpur and Biharsharif towns.

STPs with additional capacity of 170.5 MLD will be ready by December. Besides, detailed project reports (DPRs) have been prepared for STPs in Bettiah, Ara and Katihar towns and submitted to National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) for their approval.

Besides, plans are being prepared for septage management through Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) in 76 small towns using funds under state planning and other heads.
