Forres Conservative Councillor Kathleen Robertson, who leads Moray Council, met Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during his visit to Inverness yesterday (January 13).

The visit saw the announcement of the Cromarty Firth’s successful bid to host a green freeport.

Cllr Robertson, speaking after meeting Mr Sunak, attacked the Scottish Government’s approach to the oil and gas industry and accused them of trying to “torch the entire industry”.

She said: “It seems ironic that just a day after Nicola Sturgeon plunged the entire Scottish oil and gas industry into gloom with her pledge to close it down, we have had this positive announcement from the Prime Minister.

“The green freeports are a shining example of what can happen when the UK and Scottish Governments work together to create jobs and opportunities.

“Surely we could see a more positive vision for our oil and gas sector if the two Governments could work together, rather than the Scottish Government going it alone and attempting to torch the entire industry.

“Thousands of jobs in Moray rely on the offshore sector and the Scottish Government has been totally unable to reassure us that it has a plan to replace them.

“Oil and gas is just too important to be treated in this cavalier fashion and I very much hope that the SNP Government will look again at its destructive proposals and, instead, work with partners to deliver a more sustainable industry for the future.”
