BHUBANESWAR: The Biju Patnaik International Airport on Saturday claimed to be 100% independent on green energy in terms of daily consumption from this month.

“We are committed to reduce carbon footprint through various initiatives,” said airport director Prasanna Pradhan.

The airport produces around 60% of its power requirement through the on-site solar power generation. The remaining 40% requirement is achieved through other green sources such as hydro energy.

While it is managing its own with power requirement of 2MW, it is exporting 1.5 MW. It is also buying green energy from the state sources. The city airport has installed 4MW ground-mounted solar power plant at the operational area.

In 2013, the airport undertook green energy generation mission by installing a 100KW rooftop solar power plant.

Later, it upgraded it to 4.1 MW. “In fact, we have been fully running on green energy since the beginning of April. This sustainable model is part of the airport’s efforts to propel the journey towards ‘net zero’ emission,” Pradhan said.
