Palghar: In a shocking incident, a 34-year-old man allegedly strangled his 32-year-old girlfriend to death in October last year and cemented her body in the bathroom loft of his rented house in Palghar district of Maharashtra. The police, on Thursday (January 14), recovered the victim’s skeletal remains after breaking the cement wall and arrested the accused.
According to the police, the accused, identified as Suraj Harmalkar, and the victim, identified as Amita Mohite were in a relationship. Mohite’s parents had approved of their union. On October 21, 2020, she left her home informing that she and Harmalkar were going for shopping for their wedding, though the date of the wedding was not fixed.
When Mohite didn’t return home, her family members phoned her several times. All calls went unanswered. Later, they received a WhatsApp message from her, stating that she had married Harmalkar and they had shifted to Vapi in neighbouring Gujarat. Her family members called up Harmalkar to know about their whereabouts but in vain. The accused never answered their phone calls. This prompted them to approach police, according to a report by The Times of India.
Murder story unravels
Last week, the brother of the victim spotted the accused in Boisar. He took him to Boisar police station. The accused told the cops that he and Mohite got married and she was Vapi. The cops then took him to Vapi, but he kept furnishing evasive responses. On his sustained interrogation, the cops succeeded to break him down.
The accused confessed that he strangled Mohite as she was pressuring him to marry her. He then dumped her body on the bathroom loft and built a wall using cement, anti-leak glue and mortar to prevent foul smell. He also disclosed drew inspiration from movie ‘Dhrishyam’, wherein a body was buried inside a police station.
