Apple starts hiring new workers to open retail stores in India: Report

Government officials recently revealed that Apple’s contract manufacturers and component suppliers have created nearly 50,000 direct jobs in India. This happened after the smartphone production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme came into effect in August 2021. Now, the Cupertino-based tech giant is reportedly planning to offer more job opportunities to Indians. According to a report by the Financial Times, the iPhone maker is preparing to open retail stores in the country. For that, the company has started hiring retail store workers in India and is also planning to fill other roles as well.
Apple’s job opportunities in India
The report also mentions that Apple’s careers page has been updated with multiple opportunities for workers in India. This includes different roles like — business expert, “genius,” operations expert and technical specialist.
Currently, the company’s website lists over a hundred results for job positions in India, the report adds. The retail positions for various locations within the country were also listed recently. These locations include major cities including Mumbai and New Delhi.

Apple’s plans for retail stores in India
Apple had garnered plans to set up physical retail locations in India for a long time now. The company reportedly plans to start its retail business in the country which is one of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets.
In 2020, Apple started selling iPhones and other devices directly to Indian consumers online. However, the company is yet to materialise its plans for brick-and-mortar stores in the country. The company has also not shared any official comments about its India retail store plans yet.

Apart from the direct jobs, Apple’s suppliers and its manufacturing ecosystem in the country have created nearly 100,000 indirect jobs. The contract manufacturers who produce iPhones in India include — Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron. Meanwhile, the company’s component suppliers include Foxlink, Avary, Sunwoda and Salcomp.
