New Delhi: Before you head out to get your bank-related things done, you must know that bank employees are planning to go on a strike this month which would impact the banking operations too. Bank employees have decided to organise a strike on June 27 (Monday) seeking a resolution to pension and work-for-five-days-a-week issues.

The strike will follow the weekend, i. e. June 25 and June 26, which are falling on Saturday and Sunday. This would lead to straight 3-day closure for banks. The June 27 strike is being led by the United Forum of Bank Unions, which is made up of nine bank unions.

The organisations include the All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), and the National Organisation of Bank Workers.

According to AIBOC General Secretary, over 7 lakh workers across the country will join the walkout in case the Centre and bank management remains unresponsive to the Union’s demands. Hence, banking services may be impacted if the strike takes place.

What are the demands?

The demands include pension updates and revisions for all retirees, along with the removal of the national pension system and the restoration of the former pension scheme for all bank employees. Additionally, banks unions have also been pushing for a five-day workweek at banks.

Meanwhile, banks across the country will remain closed for as many as 8 days in this month. Of these 8 holidays, 2 are listed under the Holidays Under Negotiable Instruments Act, while the remaining 6 days are weekend leaves – Sundays and second and fourth Saturday.
