BHUBANESWAR: The Centre has notified the 142-km Bargarh Road-Nuapada Road railway line via Padampur as a special railway project along with the 16.5-km Talcher to Angul railway line.

The Bargarh Road-Nuapada Road project was one of the major issues during the Padampur by-election in December last year. While BJD had demanded the Centre to sanction the project, railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had assured the people of western Odisha to fulfil their demand.

On July 30, 2021, the Centre shelved the project by saying that it was operationally unjustified. However, the Odisha Rail Infrastructure Development Limited (ORIDL), a joint venture company of the Odisha government (51 per cent) and ministry of railways (49 per cent), identified the project for development.

New line will reduce travel time to capital: Bargarh MP Later, the Odisha government agreed to bear the land cost for the project. Vaishnaw had told the Rajya Sabha that the proposal was taken up for examination. Towards the end of 2021, the ministry of railways accorded in-principle approval for taking up pre-investment activities for this new line project.

Before Padampur by-election last year, commerce and transport minister Tukuni Sahu wrote to the Centre demanding sanction of Bargarh Road-Nuapada Road new line. She accused the Centre of not considering the people’s demand.

Bargarh MP Suresh Pujari said the project will solve many problems of people from his area. “It can touch tourist places like Nrusinghanath Temple while connecting Bargarh and Nuapada. These places will also get more tourists and devotees,” he added. He said the project was the dream of people from his area. This railway line will reduce travel time to Raipur and Bhubaneswar and boost business, Pujari said.

The centre has also notified Talcher-Angul new line (16.5km) as a special railway project. Sources said the new railway line with Y connection at Talcher will reduce traffic congestion. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said Talcher-Angul new line will boost the transportation of freight, including coal from Angul to different industries.
