BHOPAL: Ever heard of people tonsuring their heads to demand for a proper road in their colony? Residents of Bagh Mughaliya Extension and Arvind Vihar have decided to tonsure their heads on January 31 after their demand for completing the construction of a 2-km road went unheard.
Construction of the road was sanctioned by the BMC. It was being built at a cost of about Rs 3 crore, but the contractor stopped the work 16 months ago.
BMC officials said that the corporation’s financial condition was not good, due to which the contractor was not paid and he stopped work. A population of around 60,000 is affected due to the poor condition of the road.
Notably, residents of the affected area ‘fed glucose to the dilapidated road’ in a bid to demonstrate their anger over the road construction which has been incomplete for over a year.
“This is the only option which remains. We have repeatedly sought the government’s intervention in the matter. All we can do now tonsure our heads to raise our voice,” said Umashankar Tiwari, chairman of the Bagmughaliya Extension Colony Development Committee.
He added, “We knew that drinking glucose in the streets won’t do anything, but that demonstration made the officials concerned realize their responsibility. However, they need to act. I think after this protest, they may wake up. This time, we are tonsuring our heads to raise our voice at a higher scale.”
”He said that the roads in their locality are uprooted every year during the rains. But this particular road has not been maintained for the last two years. There are potholes all across, he added.
As a mark of protest, the residents had also sent the BMC money orders of Rs 5 to help the corporation in road construction. However, they were returned.
