BHUBANESWAR: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday inaugurated the 71st national conference of town and country planners where over 400 urban planning experts will deliberate on sustainable planning of towns and cities.

Organised by the Institute of Town Planners of India (ITPI), the theme for the conference is ‘Challenges for Urban and Regional Planning Towards Sustainable Development’.

While inaugurating the conference via video conferencing, Naveen urged the planners to develop the cities and towns with sustainable infrastructure that will help in accommodating future population growth. “As the country strives for higher economic growth, a large number of youngsters are migrating from the rural areas to urban centres, while several urban poor people continue to reside in slums. This is putting enormous pressure on urban public services and infrastructural facilities. I urge the urban planners to come up with suggestions and recommendations on new age urban planning,” he said.
