If you want to make your jewellery do the talking this season, this trend is for you. Black gemstones are back in vogue with the dark-hued stone making its return in the form of knock-out necklaces that line the collarbones, bejewelled black diamond brooches that shimmer from the lapel and bold onyx earrings that dangle from the ears. Yes, it’s time to channel your inner ’80s goth. From High jewellery to Fine jewellery, this season’s designers have used different types of beguiling black stones and let them dazzle at the forefront of their creations. In Cartier’s new Clash de Cartier collection, the Maison’s signature house codes have been mixed up with gold studs and black onyx beads, giving its new jewels a tough, rebellious spirit. While at the sixth-generation Swiss jewellery house Boghossian, its haute-couture diamonds scream old-school glamour, masterfully crafted into bold, black Jadeite. (If this isn’t a statement piece, I don’t know what it is.) For a more classic approach, look to the Danish designer Elhanati, where the new ‘Black Orchid’ collection features a divine heart-shaped black spinel suspended from a soft velvet ribbon: how chic. In London, our two British jewellery stars Stephen Webster MBE and Theo Fennell have been sprinkling their jewels with black diamonds for years in a plethora of whimsical offerings fit for rockstars and the red carpet. And the legendary French jewellery house Van Cleef & Arpels’ new ‘Perlee’ collection features a show-stopping Onyx ring set with resplendent diamonds — a dazzling party piece. Gothic, punk or chic goddess, this once under-appreciated stone is back in the spotlight. Just add oodles of eyeliner and go.
