Celebrate the sun this weekend with outdoor events

[ad_1]

Sunday is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. On that day, the sun will shine for more than 12 hours, not setting until almost 8:30 p.m.

The summer solstice always occurs sometime between June 20 and June 22, depending on the year.

Although Sunday is longest day of this year, the earliest sunrise to date has come and gone, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. That happened Monday. That’s because a solar day — the length of time it takes for the sun to travel to its highest point from one day to another — is slightly more or less than 24 hours throughout the year. This also means the sun isn’t necessarily at its highest point in the sky if one checks their watch at noon.

Whether you got up for the earliest sunrise of the year or would like to enjoy sunset on the solstice, here are some events to help kick off summer this weekend:

Crowds flock to Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, for both the summer and winter solstices. You can visit the site virtually and see the sun rise on Sunday.
