The said port will have a capacity of 4.3 million TEUs (Tonne equivalent) containers and the length will be around 1.6 kilometres. Later, it will be modified to up to 16 million TEUs in the coming years

The Kolkata port stated that an Expression of Interest (EoI) for India’s first mega container transhipment port at the cost of Rs 17,000 crore is expected to be floated by the end of January at Galathea Bay in the Great Nicobar Islands.

A senior representative of the port said that our country does not have a large container transhipment port and all foreign container cargo has to go to Singapore, Colombo and Port Klang in Malaysia.

The port will help for the transhipment of cargo from the entire east coast region and also from countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh, said P L Haranadh, Chairman of Syama Prasad Mookherjee Port, Kolkata. Additionally, it will help create new job opportunities and save a lot of forexes.

Haranadh told the media that a detailed project report will be prepared to seek bids after receiving feedback from international port operators, shipping liners and maritime service majors. The proposed draft will be sent to the government for approval. Once approved, the EoI will be floated, said A K Mehra, SMPK Deputy Chairman.

Recently, Shantanu Thakur, Union Minister of State for Port and Shipping, visited Andaman and Nicobar Island to inspect the development activities related to the port infrastructure.

The said port will have a capacity of 4.3 million TEUs (Tonne equivalent) containers and the length will be around 1.6 kilometres. Later, it will be modified to up to 16 million TEUs in the coming years.
