Chaitra Navratri 2023: The nine-day festivities of Navratri have begun and many people fast during this period to seek blessings of goddess Durga and her nine forms. During the fast, devotees abstain from wheat, rice, legumes, regular salt, certain vegetables and are allowed to eat only selected vrat-friendly foods like kuttu atta, samak ke chawal, makhanas, sabudana, potatoes among others. Many people follow diet of just fruits and milk and o not eat any grain at all while others have fruits in combination of other satvik foods. A variety of fruits can be eaten during Navratri and each of them have their own benefits. Eating fruits and vegetables regularly can prevent one from many chronic diseases from diabetes to heart disease and keep constipation at bay. Some fruits are more useful than others during fasting as they are better at boosting energy levels. Fruits high in water content, high in fibre and those that give you feeling of satiety should be preferred.

Here are some fruits suggested by Palki Chopra, Nutritionist, Founder of bites.nutritious, that will not only keep you hydrated but also provide you nutrients that will meet your fasting needs.

1. Watermelon

Adequate hydration is of paramount important while fasting during Navratri and watermelon is high on water content. It comes in the category of hydrating foods that can prevent dehydration. It contains 90 percent water and not only it helps you stay hydrated but also feel full for a long time.

2. Banana

For limiting calorie intake and to prevent binge eating, banana is a widely consumed fruit. It boosts your energy and reduces hunger pangs. These are a good source of fibre, potassium, and vitamin B6, as well as many antioxidants.

3. Apples

This is one of the fruits that leaves you mentally satisfied, is high in fibre and makes your belly feel full. Apples also help keep a check on your blood sugar. This fruit is stomach friendly as it prevents constipation during fasting.

4. Strawberry

These tiny berries contain 91 per cent water. The richest source of Vitamin c and antycyanin which helps in building immunity and prevent common cold, flu etc, these are excellent source of providing instant energy.

5. Orange

An excellent source of Vitamin C, oranges can work wonders for your energy and immunity. Fibre present in oranges help by keeping blood sugar levels under control thereby making the fruit a healthy snack for people with diabetes. The natural sugar present in oranges – fructose, can help keep blood sugar levels from rising too high after eating. Additionally, the fibre helps treat constipation to a greater extent.
