China’s first homegrown oil and gas production system has been officially put into use in a project in the southeast area of the Dongfang 1-1 Gas Field in the Yingge Sea, south China’s Hainan Province, according to China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

The application of the system marks the country achieving breakthroughs in key technologies in the sector.

The oil and gas production system is crucial equipment for exploring offshore gas and oil, consisting of wells, X-mas tree, subsea control system, flowline, separators, pumps, and transportation pipelines.

“The system functions well and its production reaches the designed goal,” said Liu Shujie, chief engineer of the CNOOC company branch in Hainan.

China previously depended heavily on the imported production system which has various shortcomings such as a long purchasing process and high prices as well as high maintenance costs. The challenges brought many restrictions to offshore oil and gas exploration. The homegrown system can boost efficiency to develop some oil and gas reservoirs.

The underwater production system needs to function stably on the seabed at a depth of more than 500 meters for over 20 years, which requires both high design capability and construction technology. The research team has successfully developed its design, key components, assembly and installment technology at sea, which helps boost the industry’s development.
