City Of Tulsa Prepared To Treat Roads For Snow, Ice

Tulsa could see some winter weather in the next few days, and city leaders and businesses are trying to make sure people are prepared and safe.

Local hardware stores say people are buying ice melt in high demand after last year’s winter weather.

“The majority of everybody coming in is after the ice melt,” said Gary Moore, who works at Westlake ACE Hardware in Broken Arrow. “That was a big one, especially after last year, with retailers running out. We’ve got plenty on stock, got more on the way actually.”

Moore says people should also make sure they are picking up other winter supplies like faucet protectors and ice scrapers.

“Besides the ice melt, the windshield coverage for your vehicle, windshield washer fluid, antifreeze, a lot of people don’t think about their vehicles,” said Moore. “Not to mention your windshield scrapers, and the big one is protecting your outside faucets.”

The City of Tulsa will be in charge of making sure expressways and main streets are cleared off and safe for drivers.

After these are clear, the city will move towards cleaning up residential streets near hospitals and schools, and ones on steep hills.

The city says to try to stay home if you can.

“The best thing is if you don’t have to be out, don’t be out,” said Tim McCorkell, the City of Tulsa Street Manager. “But if you have to be out, and about, don’t encroach on the rear of the snowplows. Stay back about 200 feet.”

Moore recommends staying up to date as best you can with the weather this time of year.

“Just pay attention to the guys forecasting the weather, be prepared,” said Moore. “You can never be prepared too much, so again just making sure you’re ready to go and watching the weather updates.”
