COIMBATORE: Chief minister M K Stalin on Friday virtually inaugurated a couple of completed smart city projects – a knowledge centre cum library on Addis Street, experience centre at Ukkadam Periyakulam and a larger-than-life Thiruvalluvar statue at Kurichi lake – in the city.

While the knowledge centre was built at a cost of 2.5 crore, the experience centre was set up with an outlay of 2.98 crore.

The knowledge centre cum library, a modern structure spanning 6,983sqft, has a capacity to seat more than 100 people. It is equipped with more than 18,000 books, two air-conditioned smart classrooms, a conference hall and 15 computers. The centre would benefit the students preparing for all competitive exams. The facility also houses a parking lot, a cafeteria and toilets.

The experience centre at Periyakulam lake, meanwhile, comes with an open 3D movie theatre, 3D sports zone for children, and a zip cycling facility.

The 25ft-tall statue of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar at Kurichi lake is made of three tonnes of steel. Another highlight is that it is sculptured with 1,330 Tamil letters, denoting the poet’s 1,330 kurals (couplets). It is to be noted that the Kurichi lake is being restored around the theme of Tamil heritage. The lake bund now features installations that depict bharatanatyam, silambattam, bommalattam and jallikattu.

District collector Kranthi Kumar Pati, city corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran, senior government officials and corporation councillors were present during the inaugural ceremony.
