The Hospitality Management and Tourism program at College of DuPage, in coordination with Cruise Lines International Association, now offers two certificate programs for people looking to work in the cruise travel industry.
The Meetings at Sea certificate and Certified Cruise Counselor program set sail this summer, and free enrollment in the cruise courses is being offered to the first 50 students who sign up for classes that start in the fall of 2022.
“We’re hoping that this program will open our students’ eyes to a different career aspect that they hadn’t thought about,” said COD Hospitality and Tourism Management Professor Mary Beth Leone. “There are so many different paths they could take.”
COD worked with Cruise Lines International Association, a cruise industry trade association, to build curriculum for the new programs.
Expanding its hospitality and travel offerings, COD’s new cruise classes cover topics like the technical aspects of the boat, types of cruises, how to sell a cruise vacation, and the distinct challenges of cruise ship hospitality.
The Meetings at Sea certificate is a four-course program in which students learn how to plan a meeting on a cruise ship, from beginning to end. The Certified Cruise Counselor program would guide students through the eight-course education portion of CLIA’s requirements to become a cruise counselor.
A hands-on experiential training is required to complete CLIA’s CCC certificate.
