New Delhi: Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge today lashed out at the Centre, contending that the BJP-led administration “didn’t even care” about the fact that China was undertaking construction work near the Line of Actual Control. The remarks came mere hours after India on Friday said that China was building a second bridge on Pangong Lake in an area that had been under its illegal occupation since the 1960s.

“China is building villages and roads across the border. We brought this to the notice of the (Central) government…they didn’t even care and told lies while misleading and misguiding the people and youth. They’ll realise that they have committed the mistake,” Kharge opined today.

On Friday, the Congress had questioned the Narendra Modi-led government’s silence on China reportedly creating infrastructure for its military in Ladakh. The opposition party had opined that the Prime Minister should talk openly about the issue. Party spokesperson Pawan Khera had also urged the Ministry of External Affairs to clarify whether China had “occupied” Indian territory.

The new bridge is reportedly being built in an area that is over 20 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Earlier this week amid reports that a second bridge was being constructed, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had said that India has never accepted such illegal occupation of its territory, nor has it accepted the “unjustified” Chinese claim or such construction activities.

An MEA spokesperson said on Friday that both the bridges constructed by China were in areas that continued to be under the illegal occupation by the other country for the past few decades.

Speaking to the media, Khera said that China had established infrastructure support for the PLA to enable it to bring artillery support through these bridges and this under construction bridge was broader than its predecessor. He also said that China was violating the ceasefire agreement under which India gave up the vantage points that was under its position, which had been established due to the valiant efforts of the Army.

Khera also alleged that by not speaking out against China, “We are demoralising our own armed forces and it is shocking to see that the Ministry of External Affairs is undermining the Defence Ministry”.
