KOCHI: With many projects designed under Smart City remaining on paper, the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MOHUA) has asked Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML) to expedite the projects. The Smart City projects, the original deadline for which was March 2020, had been delayed for the past few years due to various reasons.

On Tuesday,, mayor M Anil Kumar held discussions with top officials of MOHUA in Delhi regarding expediting the project implementation in Kochi. Mayor will soon convene a meeting with CSML officials in this regard.

“The MOHUA officials briefed me on the urgency of completing all the projects under Smart City on a time bound manner. So, we will soon design an action plan to complete all the pending projects in Kochi,” the mayor said.

The authorities will soon explore the ways for expediting each project under the Smart City in Kochi.

“There are some key projects like renovation of KSRTC bus station in the city. The project is yet to get the nod from the Smart City board. Similarly, there is a proposal for procuring refuse compactor trucks for transporting garbage from the city. That project too is being delayed as the bidders are quoting high amounts. Another project is for LED street lighting. Renovation of some of the roads outside area-based development (ABD) limits is also pending. We will design strategies for implementing these projects on a war footing,” sources said.

The CSML authorities said that they had been conducting regular meetings to review the progress of projects.

“We conduct such meetings on a regular basis. Some of the projects are caught in the problems associated with heritage issues. Some other projects are being delayed due to protests from local residents. We are taking all-out measures to sort out such issues and implement them,” said CSML CEO Shaji V Nair. But he was unable to give the details like the percentage of works completed under CSML projects.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the Union government may soon declare the Smart City phase two. But before rolling out Smart City-II, the projects under Smart City-I will have to be completed.

The situation arose out of the pandemic that also contributed to the delay in completing various projects under Smart City. The Centre had extended the deadline of the Smart City scheme thrice.
