The Delhi High Court has disposed of a petition, which sought direction to the Government of India to ensure that all items found on e-commerce websites provide information of its manufacturer and country.
The Bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Yashwant Varma observed that provisions of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 exist for the purpose and quashed the plea, filed by Advocate Amit Shukla.
The petitioner had contended that there were thousands of such websites in the country, which did not comply with the Consumer Protection (Ecommerce) Rules, 2020.
Appearing in person, Shukla said that when the citizens of the country buy products through the e-commerce website to strengthen the country, then it was also necessary that the e-commerce website and companies should mention the name of the country creating the face.
As per the petition, in 2017, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 were amended and a mandate was inserted to publish the country of origin/manufacture on the E-Commerce Website, however, the same was never enforced for the E-Commerce companies.
It added that the economy of the entire nation would suffer in the event the E-Commerce websites continue not to mention the manufacturing country/country of origin of products in the E-commerce Websites.
