Digi Yatra takes off, Kolkata airport check-in goes paperless

KOLKATA: For flyers departing Kolkata airport, their face will now be their boarding pass. Digi Yatra, which allows paperless check-in and boarding services using facial recognition technology, went live at the airport on Friday with all major carriers operating out of the city on board the system.

“Flyers departing Kolkata airport can now avail of Digi Yatra that offers seamless and hassle-free experience by eliminating the need for verification of tickets and ID at multiple touchpoints. We encourage flyers to download the Digi Yatra app and register themselves before the flight to avoid queues,” said Kolkata airport director C Pattabhi after inaugurating the facility.

While airlines will be sending SMS to flyers, requesting them to download the Digi Yatra app and pre-register before reaching the airport, nearly two dozen facilitators have been deployed to guide those who arrive without registration to complete the process at the entry gates.

Flyers to Delhi, Varanasi, Pune, Vijayawada, Bengaluru and Hyderabad need to simply associate the new flight on the Digi Yatra app while taking the return flight to avail of the facility at these airports.

Passengers travelling by IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, Go First and SpiceJet can avail of the service. The five airlines carry over 90% of passengers flying out of Kolkata. Only Alliance Air and AirAsia India are currently not part of the system. The latter is expected to come on board when it is integrated into Air India. The live trials of Digi Yatra started from February 21 in 2023 at Kolkata airport. Till March 30, 2023, a total of 9,206 passengers have utilized the Digi Yatra facility under trial mode.
