Editorial cartoons for June 20, 2021: Biden-Putin summit, infrastructure talks, Juneteenth

This week’s editorial cartoons are dominated by Wednesday’s summit meeting between President Joe Biden met Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Geneva, Switzerland. In separate news conferences after their three-hour discussion, Putin called it a “constructive” meeting with no hostility, and Biden called it “positive.” The leaders agreed to begin discussions on cybersecurity and to return their ambassadors to Washington and Moscow. They disagreed on human rights and Ukraine.

Cartoonists took a more jaundiced view, emphasizing Putin’s successful cyberwarfare efforts against the U.S., the contrast to his friendly relationship with former President Donald Trump, and Biden’s apparent nod of assent to a reporter’s question about whether he trusted Putin. The White House later said the gesture was misinterpreted.

Other topics addressed in this week’s cartoons include a new infrastructure proposal by Democrats that they hope will attract support from Republicans; congressional approval of a new national holiday, Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of the nation’s last enslaved people on June 19, 1865, in Texas; disagreement over how to teach slavery and racism in schools; and a Supreme Court ruling sparing the Affordable Care Act from being overturned for the third time.

The 2021 Pulitzer Prizes for excellence in journalism and letters were awarded last week. The judges decided not to name a winner in the editorial cartooning category, the first time that had happened in 48 years. Cartoonists expressed hurt and outrage. Multiple Pulitzer winners are represented in our weekly gallery: Michael Ramirez (2008 and 1994), Walt Handelsman (2007 and 1997), Mike Luckovich (2006 and 1995), Nick Anderson (2005), David Horsey (2003 and 1999), and Joel Pett (2000)

This week’s cartoons were drawn by Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, Handelsman, Horsey, Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and A.F. Branco, Luckovich and Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
