Hubballi: Emphasising the need to raise awareness among the farmers about the rules governing claiming insurance for crop loss, Dharwad district in-charge minister Halappa Achar on Thursday said that they must be educated about the stipulation to file their insurance claims within 72 hours of losing their crops.
The minister said that representatives of insurance companies must be available to the farmers at the centres in the rural areas, and ascertain the losses they have incurred, and suitably compensate them. He instructed the officials to conduct a joint survey to ascertain the extent of damage to the crops in the wake of recent showers. “The survey must be completed within eight to 10 days, and the details updated in the software at the earliest,” Achar said.
The minister called upon the officials of the agriculture and horticulture departments to engage in raising awareness among the public about the many avenues they had to claim crop insurance. Achar said that the officials must ensure that no farmer incurs loss, and stressed the need for accurate documentation of the entire process.
Meanwhile, Achar said that the state government had sanctioned Rs 207 crore towards repair of roads, and those maintained by the public works department. “A further Rs 3 crore will be required for those roads left damaged in the rain, and these funds will be disbursed soon,” he said.
Dharwad deputy commissioner Gurudatta Hegde said that the district had received more rain than was normal. “More than 1,100 houses have been damaged since June 1 across the district, and steps taken to repair these structures, along with schools and anganwadis, left damaged,” said Hegde, assuring the minister of completing the survey to ascertain the extent of crop loss within 10 days.
