Expressways, Highways Will Get Additional Signages Soon, Infra News, ET Infra

JAIPUR: New guidelines issued by the road safety cell of Union ministry of road, transport and highways for signages along expressways and highways will be implemented to improve road safety in the state.

The guidelines include putting up sign boards of no parking, speed limit, vehicle height limit, etc. The speed limit sign board the no parking sign board is to be repeated at every five kilometre, and advance direction signs for grade separated entry and exit to expressways have to be placed at 500m, 1km and 2km in advance of the exit, while the sign board for emergency helpline number 1033 has to be put up at every 5km interval.

The order issued by the union ministry states, “…these guidelines should be implemented on all road categories of national highways and expressways on priority basis to have uniformity. In the first stage, it should be implemented on all new upcoming highways, expressways, and greenfield corridors along with highways having PCU’s more than 20,000 and the cost implication on per kilometre basis should be worked out simultaneously.”

Ashwini Bagga, a road safety expert, said, “The primary motive of road signs is to promote road safety. After revision of Code of Practice for Road Signs (IRC 67) by Indian Roads Congress, in 2022, these guidelines issued by MoRTH further augments the procedure to be followed for installing road signs and allied road furniture on expressways and national highways. Correct placement of road signs contributes significantly in developing self-explanatory roads.”

Sign boards for merging traffic ahead, overhead cables, reduced carriageway, rumble strip must also be installed to help reduce speed in advance, the guidelines mentioned.

“The new highways in the state will be made according to these guidelines to ensure complete road safety measures are taken care of,” said a senior official from transport department.
