Finally Cortalim MLA intervenes, discusses railway double-tracking with Velsao-Pale villagers

VASCO: Cortalim MLA Antone Vas on Tuesday met the Velsao-Pale villagers, who have been opposing the railway double tracking works in the villages.

Velsao-Pale-Issorcim sarpanch Maria Gouveia was also present for the meeting which was convened by Vas following a request made by the panchayat.

After the meeting, Vas said that a joint meeting will now be held between Mormugao Deputy Collector Ravishekar Nipanikar and the villagers to address their issues. He said that the meeting was fruitful as he heard the grievances of the villagers, who have been alleging that their properties have been encroached by the Railway Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).

He said that after the joint meeting with the Deputy Collector and Velsao villagers, if required a public hearing will be conducted to settle the issue since what has been told by the Deputy Collector was different from what has been claimed by the villagers.

Gouveia said that since the main issue was the railway double tracking, it would be better if Railway authorities are asked to attend the joint meeting so that there can be a concrete solution.

Camilo Souza, a villager said that the railway authorities are insisting that villagers must produce documents in case they object to their works but he demanded that the railways should produce documents to show that the land belongs to them. He alleged that the double tracking was for transportation of coal.

Former panchayat member Maria Olga D’Souza said that the entire village was against the double tracking works and demanded that the project be scrapped.
