This week, SocialStory met with former journalist Ankit Arora, who shared his experience of cycling across the country without money and on the different cultures he encountered during his travels.

Meanwhile, edtech startup WhiteHat Jr talked about its recent initiative, WhiteHeart, that it launched during the pandemic to help underprivileged children. Under this, with the help of its teacher community, WhiteHat Jr prepares curriculum for each of the sessions, which is customised based on the requirement of the NGO partner.

This journalist quit his job to cycle 20,000 km without money across India; built a self-sustainable farm

Cycling is not only an environmentally-friendly way to travel but is also good for health.

For 32-year-old Ankit Arora, cycling has also become a means to explore India and experience the lives of different communities. A former journalist, Ankit used to pursue cycling for fitness purposes and participated in endurance events like such as long-distance cycling – covering 200 km in 13 hours, and cycling on routes like Jaipur-Jaisalmer, Jaipur-Nainital, and India Gate (Delhi) – Wagah Border.

He also entered the Limca Book of Records and India Book of Records for covering the Golden Triangle – a tourist circuit connecting Delhi, Agra and Jaipur – in 69 hours without a break.

In 2017, he decided to tour India on his cycle and had planned to return to his life after a few months. But little did he know that the journey he embarked on August 27, 2017 would lead him to discover different cultures across the length and breadth of the country, and enlighten him with the knowledge people possessed in small villages and tribal communities.

How India can use geospatial intelligence for infrastructure development to fight climate change

At the recent COP26 summit in Glasgow, India promised to reach Net Zero by 2070 — essentially balancing the total carbon dioxide emissions with its elimination from the environment — called carbon neutrality.

However, India is the world’s fourth-largest emitter of carbon dioxide after China, the US, and the EU. The latter two have issued a commitment to reach Net Zero by 2050.

Despite the incredible progress made towards sustainability across the country, India seems to be lagging on a global playing field when it comes to mass scale solutions.

How edtech startup WhiteHat Jr is offering customised content for underprivileged children through its ‘WhiteHeart’ initiative

The pandemic has created a learning deficit not just in India but across the world. While children are finding it difficult to learn through online classes, the situation is much worse when it comes to underprivileged sections as many students cannot even afford gadgets like smartphones to take online classes.

To help the underprivileged sections, edtech startup WhiteHat Jr, with over 11,000 teachers, launched WhiteHeart earlier this year.

The initiative is aimed at giving back to the society by delivering live learning sessions to children and youth from the underprivileged communities.
