Govt wants BHEL to focus on new areas, Infra News, ET Infra

The government is seeking to restructure staterun Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) by reducing the share of thermal power equipment in its portfolio and get it to focus on newer segments, such as nuclear energy, hydrogen, solar power, defence and railways.

The move comes amid a difficult phase for the heavy engineering major, which reported aprofit of Rs 31 crore on a turnover of Rs 5,263 crore. During 2021-22, the company had reported profit of Rs 410 crore, after two years of losses.

“It has been going through some difficult times and we are trying to see what best can be done,” an official said. Department of heavy industry is overseeing the overhaul. Recently, BHEL bagged the project to manufacture 80 Vande Bharat trains. Sources said a Centre of Excellence will be set up in Varanasi for manufacturing of green hydrogen equipment.
