Hard-charging sleep products player has reduced its headcount

Logan, Utah – Sleep products and mattress supplier Malouf Home  which lately has been expanding into case goods, cut its workforce at corporate headquarters last week in the face of shifting consumer demand.

In a letter to employees Friday, CEO Sam Malouf attributed the employee layoffs to “market shifts and changing demand.”

“We have made the very difficult decision to reduce the workforce at corporate headquarters and cut exploratory projects, building on our restructure from November 2022,” he said. “As CEO, I take responsibility for the decisions that got us here. The decision was made to reduce operating expenses and focus on our core business. We regret this action needed to be taken, but I believe it puts us in the strongest position moving forward.”

Malouf declined to specify the number of employees impacted by the cuts.

The company, like other importers, was hit hard in 2020 when U.S. producers brought an antidumping case to the International Trade Commission.

“I want to be clear: This decision is not a reflection of the great work from the employees leaving us. They are talented and passionate and have made an important impact on our company and community,” Malouf continued in his letter. “Kacie (Malouf) and I are incredibly grateful to everyone who has gotten Malouf to where it is today and for those who will continue forging our new path forward. Thank you for the kindness, hard work and dedication you demonstrate for Malouf, and our customers and partners, every day.”

Sam and his wife and business partner Kacie Malouf founded the Malouf Cos. in 2003 as a bed linens supplier. Since its founding, the company has expanded into mattresses, pillows, mattress protectors, toppers and more. In 2020, Malouf expanded its product assortment with the acquisition of Salt Flat,  a bedroom, dining room and upholstery resource.

The company said it is looking toward the future.

“We’re going to continue focusing on key categories and the products that have always made us great,” said Eric Holmstead, Malouf president. “We’re saddened to lose people but remain fully committed to supporting our retail partners,”
