Kolkata: Calcutta High Court directed two state-run electricity companies, WBSETCL and WBSEDCL, to pay at least 20% of the accumulated dearness allowance (DA) to employees by June 23.
Justice Rajasekhar Mantha in his order on Friday made the 20% payment conditional for the release of salaries and allowances of the CMD and two general managers of the state-run electricity companies.
“It is only upon payment as above being made that the salaries and allowances of the CMD and two General Managers of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited and West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company Limited shall be made after the leave of this court on the 24th of June 2022,” the court ordered.
West Bengal State Electricity Board Engineers’ Association had filed a contempt petition against the authorities for flouting an earlier court order. WBSETCL MD Santanu Basu and director Shyama Roy Chowdhury were in court on Friday as alleged contemnors.
The HC turned down the prayer by the contemnors’ counsel to pay DA in 36 installments. The court instead directed the two companies to pay DA in at least five but not more than eight installments. Justice Mantha sought the companies’ current and complete financial records to examine their “inability” to pay the dues at one go. These are to be submitted before the June 24 hearing.
