Hot meals, new friends greet Flint residents at Thanksgiving events

FLINT, MI — Flint resident Veronica Tivvs didn’t have the resources to make a home-cooked meal or the family to spend day with. She said it was a “blessing” to meet new friends while being afforded a meal on Thanksgiving.

Sisters Supporters Sisters sponsored an event to give out 250 hot meals to Flint residents and provide an opportunity to gather together on Thursday, Nov. 25 at Berston Fieldhouse in Flint. Mayor Sheldon Neeley and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel volunteered at the event.

“Today is a day of love and giving. What defines us is how we rise. We understand tragedy and some of these things, but we have so many success stories. Today is one of the bigger ones.,” Neeley said. “I am thankful for family and the ability to gather around like-thinking people. We were able to support families that may be in need. It’s a great day of giving, and we are going to keep giving. I am happy to be apart of it.”

Master’s House Deaf Church also held a similar event earlier in the day for its members and the community.

It didn’t matter to Pastor John Bienlein whether five or 500 people gathered at the church for a meal. He said the mission is always for the church’s message to be the “heart of the community.”

“There are so many people around that are either hungry, lonely or have no place to go. This event developed from that fact,” Bienlein said. “People know we are here for them, and that’s what our message is. We want to bring Jesus Christ to the community.”
