House Financial Services Committee to Hold Semi-Annual Hearing on CFPB

The House Financial Services Committee’s October hearing schedule includes a full committee meeting titled “Bringing Consumer Protection Back: A Semi-Annual Review of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau” at 10 a.m. EDT Oct. 27.

If sworn in by the White House, Rohit Chopra will likely testify as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau during the hearing.

Chopra’s nomination was advanced in the U.S. Senate with a tie-breaking vote from Vice President Kamala Harris to serve as the third permanent director of the CFPB, ACA International previously reported. Chopra was nominated by President Joe Biden in January.

ACA CEO Mark Neeb sent a letter to Chopra following the Senate vote, outlining industry thoughts on CFPB policymaking. In the letter, Neeb expressed congratulations on behalf of the accounts receivable management industry and urged the bureau to collaborate with ACA.

“ACA has served as a resource to the CFPB and has enjoyed collaborating on financial literacy projects as well as other direct outreach initiatives to improve consumer outcomes,” Neeb said. “ACA is eager to regularly meet with you and your team to provide perspective, feedback, and data, all of which will benefit consumers, creditors, and the ARM industry.”

He added, “Unfortunately, when information about the debt collection industry relied upon during policymaking is one-sided, or embellished upon by certain groups, the resulting policies negatively impact the ARM industry as well as consumers and creditors.”

Neeb also outlined views on Regulation F implementation, as well as the need for transparency and due process from the CFPB. Read the full letter here.
