Houston rental car has windshield crushed by mysterious cement block

For Museum District resident Jennyfer Herrington and her family, it’s been a crushing few days.

Hours after Herrington’s daughter was involved in a hit-and-run crash, the pair stepped outside to find a cylindrical cement block had smashed the windshield of the daughter’s rental vehicle.

“It’s been a hell of a week,” Herrington said. “I’m unhappy about it, to say the least. We are already having to pay for the hit and run, and now the rental car gets destroyed and becomes undriveable.”

The mysterious incident, which caused a stir on social media, occurred midday Wednesday near Herrington’s townhome at the corner of La Branch and Rosewood.

Herrington said her daughter parked the car around 10 a.m., only to discover the damage a couple hours later.

“It just seems really bizarre,” Herrington said. “Surely, somebody’s not just walking around, angry, ready to throw a cement block at a car.”

Herrington’s husband posted a photo of the destroyed windshield to Reddit early Thursday morning, but found few answers.

Some speculated the block fell off a construction vehicle. Even if that’s the case, it leaves unanswered questions about the angle the block hit the windshield at and who could be responsible.

“It’s not even that my daughter has any enemies, but it’s a rental car,” Herrington said. “Nobody would know it’s not our personal vehicle or anything.”

Herrington says she’s asked police to look at security camera footage around the area in hopes of discovering what happened. As of Thursday afternoon, a formal police report has not been completed.
