IndiGo introduces bundled beverage, former MP expresses concern, ET Infra

IndiGo, one of India’s leading low-cost airlines, has taken a new approach to its in-flight beverage services. In a departure from the trend of airlines unbundling services and charging extra, IndiGo has decided to bundle its on-board beverage sales. This means that passengers will no longer have the option to purchase soft drink cans separately; instead, they will need to buy them along with a snack.

The issue was brought to light by former Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta, who took to social media to express his concerns. In a tweet posted on X (formerly Twitter) Monday, Dasgupta stated, “I just discovered mid-air on an IndiGo flight that you can’t buy a soft drink. The airline has made it obligatory to also buy a snack, regardless of whether you want it or not. This is coercion, and I urge Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to restore the principle of choice to flyers. Squeezing flyers through all sorts of extras must stop.”

In response to the controversy, IndiGo issued a statement explaining their rationale behind this new practice. The airline stated, “..we have revamped our services to provide an efficient, sustainable, and affordable snack experience. This initiative aligns with our commitment to Go Green, as it has saved thousands of cans from being thrown away. Our customers may now enjoy a complimentary beverage with any snack purchased on board, making it better value for their money.”

The statement went on to provide a price comparison, highlighting the benefits of the new bundled approach. Previously, IndiGo’s menu offered cashews for Rs 200 and a Coke for Rs 100, resulting in a total charge of Rs 300. However, the updated menu now offers any snack paired with a glass of juice or Coke for just Rs 200, with the beverage included as complimentary. Importantly, IndiGo emphasized that their buy-on-board service remains entirely optional, allowing customers to exercise their choice in the matter.

IndiGo’s decision to bundle on-board beverage sales represents a unique approach in the airline industry, and it has sparked a conversation about passenger choice and environmental sustainability. As the airline industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how passengers and regulators will respond to this innovative change by IndiGo.
