Indonesian islanders sue Swiss cement giant for climate damage | World

Pari island, a strip of land roughly two miles long which rises only a few feet above the waves of Jakarta Bay in Indonesia, has always been prone to flooding.

Lately, however, the rising waters have gone from being a nuisance to an existential threat as the sea has begun seeping into wells, rotting the islanders’ houses, killing the palm trees and putting off tourists.

If things keep going at this rate, most of the island is expected to be submerged for good over the next three decades.

Four of Pari’s residents are now seeking redress from a seemingly improbable source: Holcim, a vast cement and construction conglomerate which has its headquarters nearly 7,000 miles away in Switzerland.
