Goalkeeper Matthew Ottamax won titles with two of the biggest teams in the country. He had a sterling career and was so good that he was nicknamed Goli wa Stadi. His home, a 12-bedroom storey mansion, is nestled in the unspoilt suburbs of Nairobi. His compound has lush, manicured gardens and a big swimming pool. When he welcomed the Art of Living crew and me into his enormous living room, I was overwhelmed by the vast space. It radiated serenity. His style is minimalist and simply impressive.

There are no paintings in sight. White sheers and thick, white curtains cover the vast windows. The accent wall doubles as the fireplace, above which two quaint art pieces are displayed. A dramatic, grandiose wraparound staircase with gold railing ascends to deck one and deck two of the home. They are a work of art. “I spent all my investment to create the glamorous effect on these staircase rails,” he said.

His living room has two dining tables. When I asked him why two, he jokingly said, “When I am very hungry, I dine next to the kitchen. And the other, I host my friends there mostly.”

His kitchen is open with fitted cabinets. The wooden floor is impeccably smooth, clean and sleek. White walls, a modern gypsum ceiling that holds a sophisticated chandelier with mood-changing light fixtures, cream sink-in sofas with red cushions, huge television, a glass table and the traditional fireplace redbrick complete the room’s luxurious décor.

As we ascended the staircase, he only agreed to show me two of his master suite bedrooms and lounge areas. Of the two, art pieces displayed on one of the shelves in the corridor. The entertainment room on the first deck, adjacent to his first bedroom, is cosy and masculine. Ottamax watches movies in this room with a kitchen and a balcony.

His first master suite is contemporary yet cosy, with heavy green curtains, a glamorous chandelier, and cream walls. Stunning gold table lamps flank his handcrafted wooden bed with white bedding. The master suite also has two comfortable grey sofas and a stylish mirror. His shoes are arranged meticulously on shoe display shelf boxes. He collects shoes, and his most expensive pair cost him Sh40,000.

“When I want to feel official, I sleep here,’’ he said. Depending on his mood, he chooses which master bedroom to sleep in.

His second master ensuite is splendid with a romantic feel. He calls it his sanctuary, his man cave, as it is on the topmost floor. The pent room’s incredible design evokes a sense of luxury and elegance.

“When I want to get away from it all, this is where I escape. Plus, I am writing a book. When I am working on it, I come here and get down to work. I feed birds every morning from the window.”

When I asked about his success, whereas most Kenyan footballers are not as successful, he explained he believed in himself from the onset, despite criticism and the challenges he faced when he played for Kenya’s national team, Harambee Stars.

His home depicts his personality and taste, which is truly inspiring.
