KANPUR: The work on the Rs 3,500 crore 284-km-long Kanpur-Aligarh four-lane highway, which will reduce the distance between Kanpur and Delhi by about 90 kms, has almost been completed. The fifth toll plaza of this highway will start from August 15.

The highway’s construction was started in the year 2019 and the widening work from Bauner in Aligarh to the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur has been completed.

Officials said, “Every day nearly 10 kms are constructed with ultra concrete machines. The work on the project started in March 2021 and its completion date as per agreement is September 2023.”

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) project manager Prashant Dubey said that the work on a six-lane bridge at Mandhana in Kanpur is in the final stages.

“The work will be completed by the end of August after which the highway will be completely ready. With the completion of the construction of this highway, the distance between Kanpur and Delhi will be reduced by about 90 kms. The distance via the highway to Delhi is 420 kms, while it is 510 kms via Etawah,” he said.

He further said that work is being done by dividing the 284-km project of GT Road (NH-91) from Kanpur-IIT gate to Aligarh into five parts.

“The first section is from Aligarh’s Bauner to Hathras’s Bhadwas, second section is from Hathras’s Bhadwas to Etah’s Kalyanpur, third section is from Etah’s Kalyanpur to Naviganj in Mainpuri, fourth section is from Naviganj in Mainpuri to Mitrasen in Kannauj and the fifth section is from Kannauj’s Mitrasen to Kanpur-IIT Gate,” he informed TOI on Tuesday.

“The project from Aligarh to Mainpuri has already been completed. People will have to pay toll tax at a total of five toll plazas on this highway. Toll collection will start from August 15 in Kanthi Nawada village near Shivrajpur in Kanpur,” he added. Kanpur district magistrate Vishak G Iyer said, “The expansion/widening work on NH-91 is nearing completion. Once completed, this will provide excellent connectivity to the people of six districts of Kanpur, Kannauj, Mainpuri, Etah, Hathras and Aligarh.”
