Long term investing can be life changing when you buy and hold the truly great businesses. While not every stock performs well, when investors win, they can win big. Just think about the savvy investors who held KDDL Limited (NSE:KDDL) shares for the last five years, while they gained 376%. If that doesn’t get you thinking about long term investing, we don’t know what will. On top of that, the share price is up 55% in about a quarter.

After a strong gain in the past week, it’s worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

Before we look at the performance, you might like to know that our analysis indicates that KDDL is potentially overvalued!

To quote Buffett, ‘Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace…’ One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company’s share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last half decade, KDDL became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

It’s good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That’s a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on KDDL’s earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It’s fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, KDDL’s TSR for the last 5 years was 396%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there’s no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

We’re pleased to report that KDDL shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 137% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 38%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
