Kevin Hart says that his remake of Planes, Trains and Automobiles with Will Smith is still in development but is a ways away from happening.

Kevin Hart’s remake of Planes, Trains and Automobiles is still in the works. The original comedic film came out in 1987, starring Steve Martin and John Candy, who were praised for their comedic dynamic and chemistry together. In the original Planes, Trains and Automobiles, type-A businessman Neal Page’s (Martin) plans to return home to be with his family on Thanksgiving are put in jeopardy when a freak snowstorm reroutes his flight in the wrong direction. He finds himself stuck rooming with talkative shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith (Candy), and together, they must navigate public transportation to find their way home.

Hart confirms that his production company HartBeat Productions is developing a Planes, Trains and Automobiles remake. He told Collider that he is working on the project along with Will Smith. The actor said that at this point they are still trying to nail down the story and setting. Hart was sure to iterate that if the project happens, it’ll be much further down the line.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, we’re trying to figure it out. Will and myself are both interested. Right now, it’s on the table. The world of development is a long one and we know that the IP is there. Everybody was willing to let us get into it, but we got to crack the code on what story is and what the world that we’ll make it in and how we can best make it fit Will and myself. Yes, but it’s… we’re a ways away from it.

Hart did drop hints that he and Smith would play the starring roles in the film. He didn’t specify who’d play Martin’s role and who’d take Candy’s, but it would be equally hilarious with Hart and Smith playing either character thanks to their comedic chops. President of Film and TV at HartBeat Productions also chimed in stating that it was in “deep development.” However, like Hart, he expressed that their Planes, Trains and Automobiles remake will be “amazing” if they are able to pull it off.
