La Plata County has announced it intends to begin repairing and regrading all of its gravel roads – some 431 miles – as soon as weather allows. The recent influx of winter weather has been hard on the roads and the county’s road and bridge department has begun to receive calls regarding surface conditions.

District managers will prioritize roads based on their condition and accessibility, depending on when they are free of snow and ice.

“The road and bridge department is very aware that these roads need to be worked on; they just can’t do it until the weather breaks,” said county spokesman Ted Holteen.

Holteen said drivers do not need to call the department to notify them that a road needs to be graded, but that anyone who encounters major problems that require immediate attention should notify the county.

“If there’s a really notable problem with a road where it becomes impassable or something, I don’t want to tell people ‘don’t call and report road problems,’ because we rely on that for all of our road maintenance,” he said.

La Plata County owns and is responsible for the maintenance of 653 miles of road, only 222 of which are paved.

A repair request form can be found on the county’s website.
