Letter: Gov. Burgum must continue to leverage renewable energy opportunities

[ad_1]

Fargo and Gov. Burgum recently hosted the governors of Iowa, South Dakota and Montana. While there are many successes we share, renewable energy has the potential to lead the region into the energy future we need. It is essential these regions’ governors examine the states’ accomplishments through renewable energy and learn from each other to build a better future for all.

Currently, renewable energy produces 11% of the nation’s electricity, and Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana have invested heavily in clean energy. Iowa currently leads the nation with 59% of its energy from renewable energy, South Dakota comes in third in the country at 40%, with North Dakota fifth at 31%. Montana is building a significant renewable energy capacity, with 12% of power from renewables. These investments mean good-paying jobs, increased energy independence, and sustained funding for rural communities. Across all four states, renewable energy employs 10,500 people and generates $197.8 million in tax revenue. While these figures are impressive, we are positioned to bring even more benefits to our region.

I urge Govs. Burgum, Reynolds, Noem, and Gianforte to continue to find ways to leverage the opportunities that clean energy provides.
