Mohali: The roads in Mohali, both main and inner, are in bad shape right now — as is the case after every monsoon. Crater-like potholes have appeared on roads, making them dangerous for commuters. The road conditions in industrial areas are worse. Similar is the condition of roads in Zirakpur.
The two agencies responsible for repairing the roads are still locked in jurisdiction problem — municipal corporation (MC) said the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (Gmada) is yet to transfer the funds for maintenance of roads while Gmada said they have handed over the sectors to MC and now civic body is esponsible for repairing of the roads.
Residents, however, said they have been sandwiched between MC and Gmada facing inconvenience even as the authorities are wasting public money.
One of the prestigious roads of Mohali, Airport Road is also marred with potholes, some places as deep as two to three feet, posing much danger to the commuters. Many such potholes have been a reason for fatalities on the roads due to high-speed vehicle zone.
The pathetic conditions of the roads in Mohali can be gauged from a report, which identifies 31 dangerous potholes, some of them as deep as three feet. Such potholes, especially during rains, become death traps and the civic body is least bothered to plug them.
Roads of Phase 9, Sector 63 to 65 and dividing road of Sector 76/77, Sectors 89 to 91 are in pathetic condition that a two-wheeler rider could have a fatal fall. In fact, there have been numerous incidents of accidents occurring due to potholes on the roads in Mohali. In many such accidents people have lost their lives. Also, the vehicles have been damaged as the tyres hit the potholes. In Zirakpur, recently, a youth riding a two-wheeler had hit a waterlogged pothole, lost control and fell on the live exposed electrical wires of a transformer and had died.
The residents have been pressing the civic body to plug the pothole and said the civic body does not act on time giving way to such incidents.
Manjit Singh Sethi, former deputy mayor and a councillor has submitted the report mentioning the identification of the 31 dangerous potholes on Mohali roads.
Sethi said, “Even the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government is not paying any attention to Mohali. Neither the Congress-led civic body has taken pains to plug the potholes posing much danger to the commuters, especially two-wheeler riders. We have pinpointed each pothole in the report, which has been submitted to the mayor as well as the MC commissioner.” He said many residents have approached him with complaints of their vehicles getting damaged after hitting a pothole in Mohali.
