MUMBAI: The Western Railway has appointed a contractor for construction of a terminus at Jogeshwari for long distance trains which will cater to passengers from north and western parts of India.

The new outstation train terminus will come up on the eastern side of the tracks, in between suburban Ram Mandir and Jogeshwari stations.

WR’s chief public relations officer Sumit Thakur said, “The contractor for the civil work has been appointed, and the target date of completion is June 2024.”

The railway board has sanctioned Rs 70 crore for the Jogeshwari terminus project and the civil works component will cost Rs 36 crore approximately, which includes construction of platform, approach road, booking office, control tower, foot over bridge and track. The civil work contract has been awarded to Giriraj Civil Developers Ltd.

The station will be accessible from Western Express Highway, besides it will be well connected by suburban and Metro lines like Line 7 (Andheri to Dahisar via Highway) and Line 6 (Lokhandwala-Vikhroli), which being an east-west corridor has connectivity with eastern suburbs too.

WR plans to shift 12 trains from Mumbai Central and Bandra terminuses to Jogeshwari terminus. There are also plans to run a few new services from this terminus. The shifting of a few services from Mumbai Central and Dadar will help open up the path for more suburban services.

The new terminus will have one island platform that will handle two trains simultaneously. There are also plans to run trains like Tejas and Train 18 (Vande Bharat) from here, sources said. The platform has a length of 600m, and can accommodate up to 24-coach trains. The terminus will have one stabling line. WR had sent a proposal to the railway board in November 2021, for a Rs 70 crore terminus. Sanction for this was received on May 12, 2023. At present, Mumbai has six such terminuses – three each on WR and CR.

Apart from building platforms, other ancillary works, such as a ticketing window and a waiting room, will also have to be undertaken. However, no maintenance facility will be built as trains will halt and leave from Jogeshwari within 60 minutes of arrival.

“The safety of a train will not be compromised as the maintenance and examination of incoming trains can be done from where it originated,” said the source.
