NASHIK: State transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar said Nashik, Pune, Solapur, Satara and Ahmednagar are the most accident-prone district in Maharashtra.

Bhimanvar added that many measures are being taken to reduce the number of accidents across the state with a special focus on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Samruddhi Mahamarg.

Bharat Kalaskar, deputy transport commissioner (road safety) said, this year, there were a total of 7,217 road accidents in the state in which 3,448 people lost their lives. Last year, during the same period, 3,982 people lost their lives in road accidents. This shows that the number of fatalities has dropped by almost 14%.

“A comparison of figures of the January 1-March 31 period of 2022 and 2023 reveals that the overall number of road accidents in the state had dropped by 22% this year. Though the three-month data is small, we believe safety drives on the road and awareness campaigns by the RTOs are paying off,” added Bhimanvar.

Approximately, 40% of all road accidents are on the highways. Districts like Nashik, Pune, Solapur, Satara and Ahmednagar record the highest number of accidents annually. “The number of highways passing through these districts that connect to major cities like Mumbai and Pune, the number of vehicles etc. impact the road accident figures, said Kalaskar.

The Mumbai-Agra and the Nashik-Pune highways are the entry/exit points to Mumbai and Navi Mumbai connecting to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), he added.

Speaking to TOI, Bhimanwar said apart from issuing challans to erring motorists, the RTOs were also counselling them. Over the past five months, more than 40,000 motorists have been counselled on the Mumbai-Pune highway, and over 4,000 were counselled on the Samruddhi Mahamarg.

Against this backdrop, the National Seminar on Road Safety and Best Practices in Transport Department was organised in Nashik on Saturday by the Executive Officer’s Association of Motor Vehicle Department, Maharashtra and the All-India Federation (AIF) of Motor Vehicles Department Technical Executive Officers’ Association.

Apart from the transport commissioner and deputy transport commissioner (road safety), MP Hemant Godse, additional transport commissioner of Maharashtra Jitendra Patil, Nashik RTO Pradeep Shinde, AIF president Ashfaq Ahmed and Nashik deputy RTO and general secretary of AIF Vasudev Bhagat among others attended the seminar.

AIF president Ashfaq Ahamed said the national seminar was organised so that best practices by RTOs can be shared to reduce the overall rate of road accidents.
