LUDHIANA: Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari will lay the foundation stone of the 93.2 km. In that year, 128 deaths were reported in 152 accidents. Ludhiana is followed by Amritsar with 28 such deaths in 39 accidents.

In 2021, 43 accidents took place on highways, killing 42 and injuring 11. This suggests a decrease of 2.33% in accidents on highways and 16.7% reduction in the number of deaths in such accidents in 2022 as compared to 2021.

Data for accidents on state highways in Ludhiana since 2016 suggests that at 108, the number of accidents was highest in 2016. A total of 77 accidents were reported in 2017. Data also suggests that at 92, the number of deaths on state highways in Ludhiana was highest in 2016 followed by 60 in 2019.

International road safety expert, Kamal Soi said that broken down vehicles left unattended on highways and wrongly parked vehicles added to the danger on the roads. He said that toll agencies should ensure round the clock patrolling on highways.

“Also, there are flaws in road engineering, which contribute to accidents on highways. Besides, there is no enforcement of speed on such roads,” Soi said.
