The Pune railway division yesterday opened its first ‘restaurant on wheels’ for passengers and the general public at Chinchwad railway station. The restaurant named ‘Chinchwad Express’ by the railways has been built by refurbishing the interior and exterior of a derelict railway coach. ‘Chinchwad Express’ was inaugurated at the hands of Pune divisional railway manager (DRM) Indu Rani Dubey. “We hope that the convenience of this attractive restaurant will afford a new experience to passengers and they will also like it,” Dubey said on the occasion.

According to the information shared by the railways, the central railway (CR) has been the first to start such restaurants affording a unique dining experience in a railway-themed setting. The first of CR’s ‘restaurants on wheels’ was opened last year at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai, in the form of a modified coach mounted on rails at Heritage gully opposite to platform number 18 at CSMT.

While Heritage gully showcases rail artefacts including narrow-gauge locomotives and parts of the old printing press, the restaurant has 10 tables and can accommodate up to 40 patrons. The interior is decorated such that diners can enjoy meals in a rail-themed setting. The CR’s restaurants-on-wheels offer cuisine from the north and south of India as well as continental and other fare, and the menus are decided by the licensees and approved by the railways as per market rates. Plans are afoot to set up similar such restaurants at Akurdi, Miraj and Baramati railway stations in the Pune division and the process of setting them up has already started.
