Indore: Amid ongoing survey of damaged soyabean yield, the fact that only around 50% of the crop is insured will deprive affected farmers of compensation for their crop loss.
According to Indore agriculture deputy director Shiv Singh Rajput, around 1.30 lakh farmers of the district have sown soyabean crop in around 2.4 lakh hectares and after reporting crop loss due to Yellow Mosaic, Stem Fly, Aerial Blight and Rhizoctonia fungus, a survey of the same was underway.
“In Indore, around 1.28 lakh hectares of farmland have been insured. Insurance premium of around Rs 600 Crore has been paid for it and of this, Rs 11.5 crore is farmers’ share,” he said.
He added that loss to the soyabean farmers due to the diseases will be estimated based on the survey while the insured crop will be compensated accordingly.
“Our crop couldn’t be insured due to not having Kisan Credit Card due to corruption and apathy at part of the officials concerned in issuing the same” Shrikrishna Mandloi, a farmer of Pipalda village, alleged after his Soyabean crop in around 60 hectares of farmland reported loss due to Yellow Mosaic.
Senior agriculture officials however rubbished the allegations. “Around 50% Soyabean crop is not insured mainly due to ‘defaulter’ farmers not paying installments of the crop loan and thus, they are ineligible for the Kisan Credit Card” Rajput said.
Meanwhile, the agriculture minister Kamal Patel said that he is chalking a proposal to the state government to pay crop insurance premium for farmers having less than 2.5 acres of land.
“Small scale farmers, who fail to pay the premium of their crop to insure it, face the maximum loss and therefore, I am preparing a proposal to the state government to pay the same to safeguard agriculture producers having less than 2.5 hectares farmland,” he said. TNN
