COIMBATORE: City corporation commissioner M Prathap on Wednesday said Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Sigh Puri had appreciated the initiative to make Coimbatore a carbon neutral district by 2050. “The minister has called on the other cities to take a leaf out of the initiative for a sustainable future.”

The Union minister was the head of the consultative committee of parliament affairs that reviewed smart city projects of a few select cities in Goa on Monday.

It is to be noted that the DMK government had recently chosen Coimbatore to turn it into the first carbon neutral district in the state.

“The MPs, who were part of the consultative committee, appreciated our projects to rejuvenate the lakes and develop DB Road and Race Course into smart roads under the smart city mission,” Prathap, who made a presentation on some of the projects being implemented by the city corporation before the committee, said.

According to him, the Union minister had urged all the cities to vie for digital transformation in line with the central government’s digital push. “He also sought a road map from the cities to improve digitization.”

The corporation commissioner said there was something to learn from other cities at the meeting. “Surat is generating massive revenue by selling treated water to industries. The city has also invested a lot in an integrated command and control centre. It helps in detecting issues in public transport, water, electricity and CCTV, solving them in no time.”
