PATNA: Despite registering a steep growth in passenger traffic, the Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna dropped four places, from 70th to 74th position, in the first quarter (January-March) of Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey for 2023, compared to the fourth quarter (October-December) last year.

As per the latest rankings released by the Airports Council International (ACI), the overall scoring of Patna airport stood at 4.67 points, compared to 4.68 points earlier.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials said out of the 15 airports surveyed between January and March this year, Patna airport ranked 13th on 33 parameters to assess the satisfaction level of passengers.

Varanasi secured the first spot while Trichy and Indore jointly shared the second spot, followed by Chennai.

According to airport officials, the low ranking is because of the ongoing construction work and space constraint in the existing terminal building. They hope the ranking to improve once the new terminal building becomes operational with other supporting facilities.

“Despite all the challenges, the airport strived hard and increased the number of toilets, baggage conveyor machines, self-check-in counters, outlets and capacity of security hold area,” an official added.

The Airport Service Quality survey is a benchmark to measure passengers’ experience while they are at the airport with an aim at unifying industry practices for airport standards globally.

The parameters on which the airport gained were value for money of the selected mode of transport (4.56 points), courtesy and helpfulness of staff in the check-in area (4.64), courtesy and helpfulness of security screening staff (4.63), shops (4.44), Wi-Fi service quality (3.92), availability of charging stations (4.12) and health safety (4.58).

The airport has witnessed a decline up to 0.15 points on some of the basic parameters, including signage to reach the terminal, ease of finding check-in area, waiting time at the security screening, comfort of waiting in the gate area, availability of seats, availability of flight information (gate and time), walking distance inside the terminal, entertainment and leisure options and ambience.
