‘People’s leader’ title will cement Xi’s grip on power | World

President Xi may receive the formal title of “People’s leader” in the forthcoming Chinese Communist Party Congress in the autumn, after the phrase began appearing in public statements.

Only two presidents have been given the title of “leader” – Mao Zedong was granted the title “the great leader” and his successor Hua Guofeng, “the wise leader”.

Xi has been described as the core of the party for years. But the addition of the “People’s Leader” in recent political statements and propaganda in the build-up to the congress held every five years has sparked speculation that it may become a formal title.
