The train is at the station and ready for the holidays at the Waynesboro Model Railroad Club.
The club, located at 3291 Waynecastle Road, is holding its annual open house to show the public the handmade sceneries of hillsides and small towns with lighthouses, ski resorts and even a baseball field complete with fans in the stands and a baseball player stealing a base.
In order to share their love for model trains, club members are having multiple open houses during the months of December and January to show their HO-scale, N-scale, three-rail O-scale and two-rail O-scale trains.

“We get a lot of people who come back every year to see what’s new,” club president Brian Cowgill said. “We’re in the process of putting a town in the first-floor display and replacing a lot of track. Over time it gets dirty and oxidizes. Maintenance is never done,”
For Cowgill, his love of trains and working with displays stared when he was a young man.
“I’ve always liked trains, and my brother-in-law was a member here at the club so I got an application years ago and have enjoyed the hobby since,” he recalled.
Founded in 1990, the club has seen its fair share of changes as well as advances in technology to where trains are now operated by WiFi connections though smartphones.
“Now a lot of the engines have sound effects, smoke and lights as well as the details in the models have come a long way over the years,” Cowgill said.
The club is open to all who have a passion for model railroading and enjoy the camaraderie that comes along with the hobby, whether your interest is scenery, operating the layout, or sharing ideas with fellow members.
“We have a few new members, bringing our membership to around 15, but we have had upwards of 40,” Cowgill explained. “Recently we had a few young guys join; it’s good to see a few younger guys come in to keep the hobby going.”
Open houses for the 3,000-square-foot, two-story facility are scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. on Dec. 4, 5, 11, 18, 19 and 26 and Jan. 2, 8 and 9.
“We love seeing the smiles on the faces of kids and adults who come to the display; it’s great,” Cowgill said. “The point of doing this is to share it with the public. A lot of people stop for the first time and say they didn’t know it was in here.”
Plans are to add additional lighting features to the displays.
